What Is the POP Movement?

Protect Our Planet (POP) is an initiative designed to address the urgent need to share information and knowledge with youth on solutions to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) adopted by the UN, mitigate climate change and adapt to its growing impacts. Intended to motivate and inspire action by youth to ultimately reach the size, scale and momentum to become a global movement, POP mobilizes the youth worldwide to take collective action needed to mitigate climate change and protect threatened ecosystems.

POP Launches in Mexico City

The POP Movement was launched, in partnership with Cinema Planeta, in México City on Earth Day, April 22, 2016.  In  Señor, Juan Diaz de la Torre's, Secretary-General and President Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (SNTE) presence, Dr. R.K. Pachauri, Chief Mentor addressed teachers from across the country at México City’s Centro Cultural del México Contemporaneo.  As, many as 800 teachers were physically present in the audience, and 100,000 watched the address live through the SNTE’s exclusive online channel.

Partnership with Cinema Planeta

The POP Movement partners with Cinema Planeta, an award winning not-for-profit, which hosts México's premier environmental film festival to promote the protection of our natural environment. Cinema Planeta is the POP Movement's lead implementation partner its all activities in México.
Breakfast with Governor of Morelos
A breakfast meeting was held with Governor Graco Ramírez at his residence in Cuernavaca on April 24, 2016 to discuss launch of the POP Movement with students in September, 2016 when the state of Morelos holds its major event "Green Solutions". 
The meeting was attended by Governor Ramírez, his wife Sra. Elena Cepeda de León, Dr. Topiltzin Contreras MacBeath, Secretario de Desarrollo Sustentable del Estado de Morelos, Dr. R.K. Pachauri and Dr. Ash Pachauri, Chief and Senior Mentors of the POP Movement, respectively, Eleonora Isunza de Pech and Gustavo Martínez Ballesté from Cinema Planeta, Antonio Sarmiento Gálan, Instituto de Matemáticas, Unidad Cuernavaca and member of the International Advisory Board of the POP Movement.

Mexican Parliament Address
​Dr. Pachauri made a presentation on climate change before the deputies (congressmen) who are members of the House of Representatives of México.  He used material from the 5th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to highlight the serious impacts of climate change on Mexico as well as the benefits of mitigation measures to promote sustainable development.  He also announced plans for launching the POP Movement in Mexico to which the Deputies were very responsive and supportive.  This session was held under the Chairmanship of the Honorable Cesar Camacho Quiróz and in the presence of the Honorable Matias Nazario Morales.

Partnerships

Mr. Salman Ahmad, the leader of the well-known, New York-based musical group called "Junoon" has partnered with the POP Movement, and will hold performances in various parts of the world in support of the POP Movement. The POP Movement held discussions regarding partnerships with Dr. Arlene Blum, founder of the Green Science Policy Institute and One More Generation in the US in April 2016.

​The POP Movement will be announced and plans laid for implementation at the forthcoming Africa Sustainable Development Forum to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia during May 11-13, 2016.
​Dr. R.K. Pachauri met with Dr. Leonel Fernández at the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development’s (GFDD), New York on April 25, 2016.  Dr. Fernández’ and Dr. Pachauri discussed the POP Movement’s launch in the Dominican Republic at the upcoming Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) in September 2016.

International Advisory Board

​The POP Movement is in the process of constituting a compact International Advisory Board consisting of highly respected and distinguished personalities.
