POP Papers
Issue 3. Jul 2016

Message from Our Chief Mentor

The POP Movement was officially launched on Earth Day this year in Mexico City. In these past three months much has happened to carry this initiative further. The launch event had been organized by SNTE, the large teachers’union in Mexico with a total membership of 1.6 million teachers and strong linkages with similar unions overseas, particularly in Latin America. Early in July an MoU was signed with SNTE for a three-year program of action for the POP Movement in Mexico, which will be supported by SNTE, but efforts are on to seek support from other sources as well to ensure a comprehensive and ambitious effort in Mexico which would provide valuable experience for similar programs in other countries.

A major effort is in hand to create partnerships to extend our efforts both geographically and sectorally. Dr. Ash Pachauri has been leading this effort by which our partnerships have extended to outstanding organizations located in various parts of the world, working in a number of interconnected fields of direct relevance to the POP mission. We are also privileged to have added two new members to our International Advisory Board, to bring in youth- driven vigor and perceptions which would greatly strengthen our efforts. Both Ms. Parrys Raines (21 years) and Ms. Olivia Ries (13 years) have a remarkable record of initiatives to protect the earth’s natural resources and ecosystems, which they took in hand in their early childhoods. In extending our partnerships into interlinked missions, special mention needs to be made of wildlife conservation, wherein we now have remarkable global initiatives to link up with.

Plans are on to launch the POP Movement in countries of Latin America, using Mexico as a base, and simultaneously in the UAE, Montenegro, and Australia as well as in the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean region. Plans are also in hand for organizing major musical and other cultural events, particularly by harnessing the talent of our partner, the famous musical group, Junoon. These would be pursued as soon as we are able to mobilize the necessary finances for putting together high class events, which would help to create awareness and raise funds for the POP Movement.

This program by which we aim to harness the talent and determination of youth inspired by knowledge on a global scale, would progress only on the strength of our partners. For this purpose and to ensure proper sharing of information we would need news and other material from our partners on a regular basis. We would also greatly appreciate any inputs from them on contacts of those to whom our regular newsletters could be sent. The world has a small window of opportunity. I had stated two years ago that we are now five minutes before midnight, and if we want to ensure that this planet and its ecosystems be protected for the survival of all species and the welfare of future generations, we need all hands on deck, and the active involvement of like-minded individuals and organizations. We represent a small and humble effort which has to be multiplied several times over by other organizations and pioneering individuals.  And this is just a beginning. We know we have far to go, and we certainly shall.

Dr. R.K. Pachauri
