Message from Our Chief Mentor
It was on Earth Day, the 22nd of April last year, that we formally launched the POP Movement in Mexico City, and the past eight months have been an extremely busy period in which we have tried to lay the foundations for a global movement that can make a difference. While eight months is a short period of time, it is also much too long, given the urgency with which human society must act to deal with the growing challenge of climate change and its serious implications not just for coming generations but also those who are living today. This newsletter provides a brief glimpse of what we have been able to do since Earth Day, 2016 and relevant activities, some of which took place earlier. There is every reason to believe that we are running against time. Science has told us, as brought out by the Fifth Assessment Report of the IPCC, that if we delay action we would be confronted with unacceptable risks and the option of reducing emissions at a very steep rate, for which technologies, institutions and mindsets would perhaps not be ready. The international system under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and several national governments have been working hard to make progress, but the results are there for all to see. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the year 2000 were a total of 39 gigatonnes of CO2 equivalent (GtCO2-eq), but by 2010 they had increased to 49 GtCO2-eq. In the past year, for the first time, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere remained above 400 parts per million (ppm) despite seasonal changes and related variations, as explained by the work of David Keeling. Let the youth of the world resolve that 2017 will mark a turning point in the battle against human induced climate change, and let people of all ages assist in this effort, so that the risks of climate change, which include the possibility of abrupt and irreversible changes, can be contained through timely action involving both adaptation to those impacts which are now inevitable and mitigating the emissions of GHGs. It is imperative that human society at large, led by the youth of the world, moves along the RCP2.6 pathway which the IPCC has assessed as being the most probable to ensure temperature increase being limited to 2 degrees centrigrade relative to pre-industrial levels by the end of this century. I take this opportunity to convey our best wishes on behalf of Dr. Ash Pachauri, Ms. Heeta Lakhani, and myself as well as all our friends and supporters, for a very happy New Year, and wishing that 2017 is a period when we really turn things around to deal effectively with climate change.
